The Smile That Radiated

His smile radiated from his heart in a way that stopped me for a second, because it wasn’t about the hoodie or the hat, it was about being seen and appreciated in a place that has become so meaningful to him.

We were dropping off our third carload of teddy bears at the Boys & Girls Club when the staff surprised him with his very own hoodie and hat. There was something powerful about watching him receive the same warmth he has been giving.

It was a special girl's birthday, and we brought out the teddy bears that had been collected so she could see the love that had come in for kids like her. When one particular bear was pulled out of the bag, she smiled softly at first, but when Dorian leaned in with that familiar spark of excitement and said, “Ooh, this is the one Miss Pine Tree State donated,” her eyes lit up in a completely different way.

Suddenly it wasn’t just a teddy bear- it was a gift with a story attached to it, a connection that stretched beyond the room, an invisible thread linking a donor she may never meet to a moment she will likely never forget. Those invisible threads are what hold us together.

A community member gives.

A child receives.

A teenager helps bridge the space in between.

And in that bridging, leadership takes root.

As I write this, Dorian and a friend are outside building a snow fort they have spent hours constructing, carefully shaping walls as if it were the most important project in the world. No rush. Just presence- enjoying the present moment. He inspires me and gently challenge me to slow down and to be more present.
