Life has a funny way of reminding us that our story isn't finished.

Sometimes that reminder comes through an unexpected opportunity. Sometimes it arrives with a simple text that says, "We should get together." Before you know it, a date is on the calendar, decades have disappeared, and you're driving to meet people who knew you long before life became so wonderfully complicated.

There is something incredibly special about friends who knew you before the titles. Before you were a mom, a spouse, a business owner, or the person everyone depends on. They were there for your first crush, your first kiss, your biggest dreams, and all the moments that shaped the person you would become. They remember a version of you that still exists, even if life has buried her beneath calendars, responsibilities, and the pace of everyday living.

We hadn't really talked since graduation and yet, within minutes, it felt as though no time had passed at all. We laughed about our childhood homes, retold stories I hadn't thought about in years, and filled in the missing chapters of one another's lives. We talked about raising families, building careers, navigating unexpected turns, and discovering that while our paths had looked different, so many of the lessons had been the same.

Throughout the afternoon, one friend who wasn't sitting around the table somehow remained part of every conversation. Jill's name surfaced naturally, woven into memories that made us laugh, smile, and occasionally pause. Gone far too soon, she reminded us that while friendships can withstand the passage of time, life doesn't always give us the luxury of believing there will be another opportunity.

As the afternoon came to an end, we made each other a promise. We weren't going to let another twenty years slip by. We're going to stay in touch. Celebrate life's milestones together. Hold each other up when life gets heavy. Laugh until our cheeks hurt.

As I drove home, I kept thinking about how many people we all carry in our hearts. The friend you've wondered about. The roommate who still makes you smile when they cross your mind. The person you've meant to call, text, or invite to lunch, but somehow life kept getting in the way. The truth is, we always think there will be more time. Sometimes there is.

Sometimes there isn't.

If someone came to mind while reading this, don't let that feeling pass.

Send the text and tell them you've been thinking about them.

Relationships are one of life's greatest gifts, and they deserve more than our good intentions.
