Post-Traumatic Growth: Finding Strength Through Life’s Challenges

Updated: Dec 10, 2024

Life has a funny way of throwing curveballs at us—sometimes big, sometimes small, but always impactful. Whether it's going through a divorce, selling assets, changing careers, or even moving back to your hometown to start over, it’s all part of the human experience. And while it’s not always easy, research shows that it’s possible to grow through those challenging moments.

Studies by psychologists Richard Tedeschi and Lawrence Calhoun, who coined the term Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG), reveal something pretty powerful: about 50–70% of people report experiencing significant personal growth after trauma. But here’s the thing—growth doesn’t mean the pain or difficulty magically disappears. It means that, through reflection and accountability, we can uncover new strength, develop deeper relationships, and gain a clearer sense of purpose.

I have gone through a divorce, sold our family's home and changed careers, which felt like stepping into the unknown. And moving back to my hometown to start over wasn’t without a lot of tears, fear, and uncertainty. There were moments when I didn’t know how I would keep going, but faith—that quiet belief that what lay ahead would be better than what I was leaving behind—kept me moving forward.

Here’s the key takeaway: Post-Traumatic Growth isn’t about rewriting your history. It’s about reframing it. Reflection allows us to look back with more clarity, understanding what we’ve been through and how it has shaped who we are today. But reflection alone isn’t enough. Accountability—whether it’s to ourselves, a coach, or a trusted friend—ensures we don’t get stuck in the past. It pushes us to use that newfound understanding to create a better future.

It’s easy to get caught up in the pain and difficulties of life’s challenges, but it’s important to remember that we have the power to choose how we respond. By embracing our experiences with a mindset of growth, we allow ourselves the opportunity to discover strengths we didn’t even know we had.

As I continue to move forward, I’m learning that sometimes, the hardest parts of life are the ones that lead to the most meaningful growth. And while I may not have all the answers right now, I know that by reflecting, being accountable to my journey, and staying hopeful, the path ahead holds the promise of something brighter.

So, if you’re in the middle of a tough season, remember: growth is possible. It’s not about erasing the past; it’s about using what you’ve learned to build a stronger future. Keep going, step by step, with faith that what’s ahead is worth the journey.
