Shifting what failure means

Writer: Lisa LiberatoreLisa Liberatore

Did you know that 9 out of 10 new businesses will fail?  That is a sobering statistic but if you’re like me, you know it is the risk you HAVE to take.  Because when you don’t fail, you thrive! And the thrill of experience is as important as the outcome of the venture. I view my failures as fun detours on the way to your goal.  If you focus on finding happiness and joy in the process and always improving your skills, what is reported as a “failure” is actually the best knowledge that no educational institution can provide.  The friendships and wisdom you learned from people you met on that journey will provide you with confidence, resilience and knowledge to make the next path you venture done even better than the one before.  Next time you fear failure, shift your thinking to the goal! Get excited to reach it and allow yourself to think outside the box to achieve that goal. Whatever you do, don’t get stuck in the emotional stage of failure.

“Happy people live secure in the knowledge that the activities that bring them enjoyment in the present will also lead to a fulfilling future” -Tal Ben-Shahar, Ph.D.
