Losing my dad was one of the deepest, most profound pains I have ever experienced. It felt like a part of me had been torn away, leaving an emptiness that no words or time seemed able to fill. The grief was overwhelming, and I knew I needed to find a way to channel it—some way to feel connected again, to process the loss, and to move forward without losing myself in the sadness.
That’s when I found stained glass.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I signed up for the class. All I knew was that I needed something to occupy my hands, my heart, and my mind. Stained glass turned out to be exactly what I needed.
The process is far from easy. It’s slow, deliberate, and requires absolute concentration. Each piece of glass must be cut with precision, often needing millimeters shaved off to fit perfectly with the others. It demanded that I slow down, quiet the noise in my mind, and focus on the details right in front of me.
In those moments, the grief didn’t disappear, but it transformed. The act of creating something beautiful out of fragmented pieces mirrored what I was trying to do with my own heart—piece it back together, one careful step at a time.
The colors, the textures, the light shining through—it all reminded me that even in the midst of loss, beauty can still emerge. Grief may never fully go away, but it can be channeled into something meaningful, something healing.
If you’re experiencing grief, I encourage you to find a creative outlet that speaks to you. It doesn’t have to be stained glass—it could be painting, writing, gardening, or anything that helps you slow down and focus on creating something beautiful.
Grief has a way of demanding all our attention, but in those moments of creativity, there’s space for hope, for peace, and for a quiet kind of joy. And sometimes, that’s exactly what we need to start healing.
