I remember the day everything changed. I came home from work with my son, expecting the usual routine, when I found out my husband was leaving. In that instant, my whole world imploded. The life I had known was suddenly gone, replaced by a new, unexpected reality.
Planning for the unexpected is something I never thought I’d need to take seriously—until life hit fast and hard. It’s the kind of thing that doesn’t announce itself with a warning; one moment everything seems fine, and the next, your world is flipped upside down. It could be a medical emergency, a job loss, or a change in your personal life. Whatever it is, it happens when you least expect it, and it forces you to adjust in a hurry.
So when I tell you, “Start planning for the unexpected,” it comes from personal experience. We can’t predict everything, but we can take steps to make sure we’re prepared if the worst happens.
Here are a few things I’ve learned to think about:
Get your affairs in order. If something were to happen to you or your partner, would the other person know where everything stands? Have you written down all your bills, accounts, and important financial details?
Review beneficiaries. This is a big one. If you haven’t already, make sure you’ve designated beneficiaries on your bank accounts, retirement plans, and insurance policies. Without this, your assets can be tied up in probate, causing stress for those grieving your loss.
Health care proxy & power of attorney. Have you designated someone to make medical or financial decisions for you if you are unable? This is something many people overlook, but it’s so important.
Emergency savings. Life happens unexpectedly, and it’s so much easier to weather the storm if you’ve got a financial cushion to fall back on. Start setting aside even a small amount, and it will help take some of the pressure off in tough times.
Communication is key. Make sure your family or trusted loved ones are aware of your plans and where to find the important documents if needed. This can save a lot of confusion and stress in a time of crisis.
Life doesn’t always go according to plan, but being prepared for the unexpected can make all the difference when you’re faced with a sudden shift. If you’re feeling unsure about where to start, I’d love to help you fortify your future. Reach out, and let’s work together to ensure that, no matter what comes, you have a plan in place.
